I remember Live Oak trees in the middle of an intersection, the sound of mourning doves on a summer afternoon, the Chow dog on Nopal street that I rode my bike 4 blocks out of the way to avoid, Old Main Elementary, homemade treats on Halloween, the treehouse in Ralph Fulenwider's front yard, the skating rink that came every summer, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans coming to the Centennial, sandlot baseball and football games, Concan, Garner Park, Chalk Bluff, the 19-mile crossing, Mishamawka, the 2-mile waterhole and the legend of the railroad train that was supposed to be in the bottom of it, horned toads, the all night slumber parties on the last day of school, sneaking off to Villa Acuņa and Piedras Negras, the band trips to the San Antonio Symphony, watching American Bandstand at Yvonne Calvert's house, how hot it was in summer and how it never seemed to bother us, "Blue Northers" in winter, the Stardust drive-in, the El Lasso theater, the Honey Hut, Hangar 7 Cafe, Walgreen's and Ben Franklin's, cruisin Getty street, how goofy Mr. Posey was, how great Mr. Buchanan was, being overweight and pimply, starched blue jeans, girls wearing what had to be hundreds of petticoats with a skirt that had a french poodle on it, football game ribbons, my '47 Studebaker then my '50 ford with the Mercury engine, but most of all, I remember Uvalde and how the Lord blessed me by allowing me to grow up there in the '50s and giving me such wonderful friends. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I had writing it. There are so many more good memories and I hope you will add you own to this list. |
Welcome to the Reunion Homepage for the 1998 reunion which was
held jointly by the classes of 1957, 1958 and 1959 the weekend of June 26
- 28.
Prime Mover - In 1995, Jimmy LaPeyre took the
initiative to make this reunion happen and began compiling a mailing list and contacting
classmates to help find the rest of us. His efforts were the driving force to make this
event a reality, and he has our thanks and congratulations for his great efforts.
The reunion chairmen for the classes were Lou(Norma
Howerton)Ephraim for the class of 1957, Jimmy LaPeyre for the class of 1958
and Gary Heyen for the class of 1959.
We have a guestbook at the bottom of
the page and hope you will sign it to let us know you were here, where
you are and what you are doing. You may also enjoy viewing the guestbook to
see who else has signed it and what's going on with them.
Also please e-mail your U.S. mailing address
to FOREVRTX@aol.com and if you have other classmates'
current addresses, then e-mail those too!!!
Friday,June 26
6 - 8 PM - We signed in and picked up information and
event maps at the Uvalde City Park on Main Street across the Leona River
from the Uvalde Country Club.We thought people were going to come and go, but they
came and STAYED, so we had a great crowd that gathered for this first event in the
"warm" Uvalde air.
Saturday,June 27
8 - 10 AM - We had more registration and were
welcomed with coffee and famous cinnamon rolls at COBBERS - 315
E. Main, right across the street from the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce/Civic Center.
Cobbers was written up in the July, '98 edition of Texas Highways, and we packed the
place with another impressive turnout. Mrs. Shockley, mother of Bill Shockley, class
of '58 and Mrs. Dimmitt, mother of Deanna, class of '59 joined us.
11:00 AM - We were treated to incredible barbecue and fellowship at Paul (Freddy) Edwards' ranch in Montell. In spite of the 100 degree heat, everybody showed up and had a great time. We put our feet in the river and sat in the shade and got reacquainted and had a ball. We enjoyed having McAfee Daniel join us for this gathering.
6:00PM - midnight - Purple Sage on W. Hwy 90. We ate and danced the night away. We had class pictures taken, gave some wonderful (and some silly) awards and prizes, and heard from such distinguished speakers as McAfee Daniel, Rev. Grady Roe, brother of Glenda Roe Seamons '59, and Dan Haby. We were entertained by The Memories, Uvalde's own music trio, and a dance presentation choreographed by Mary Louise (Fitch) Dickehut of the class of '59, and performed by Margie Rae (Welty) Barber - '58, Beverly Heyen, wife of Gary Heyen - '59, Mary Louise Dickehut and Kelles (McWhirter) Kennedy, daughter of Quin McWhirter - '58. Several special guests came, including Wave Thompson, Mrs. Jack Heyen and Mr. & Mrs. Henry Culp.
Sunday,June 28
9 - 10:30 AM - At the Senior Citizens' Center of Uvalde - 230 E. Main, adjacent
to the Chamber of Commerce Visitors' Center, we had a wonderful "Farewell" breakfast
with classmates, cooked by Bucky Rankin. We got address lists, had our T shirts autographed and exchanged lots
of hugs and good wishes. More special guests were there including Wave Thompson and Mr. &. Mrs.
Albert Finley, parents of Sue Finley, and Retha Smith, mother of Barbara (Black) Williamson'59.
Many photos were taken and are being added on this page. If you have photos of reunion events you would like to see on this website, please send them to Quin McWhirter and every effort will be made to include them. There are some limits on the amount of file space available, so if we're inundated with photos (which we hope we are), we will, of necessity, have to be selective in choosing representative photos to feature.
